Prerequisite • Batteries must meet the General Requirements of § 1.3 in particular the test requirements Specific Requirements • Each battery incorporates a safety venting device or is designed to preclude a violent rupture under normal conditions of carriage; • Each battery is equipped with an effective means of preventing external short circuits • Each battery containing cells or series of cells connected in parallel must be equipped with an effective means, as necessary, to prevent dangerous reverse current flow (e.g. diodes, fuses). • Batteries manufactured after 31 December 2011 must be marked with the Wh rating on the outside case. Two possible solutions, lithium ion batteries must: • be completely enclosed in inner packagings, then placed in a UN packaging of the type shown below that meets the Packing Group II performance standards, then placed with equipment in a strong, rigid outer packaging; or • be placed in inner packagings that completely enclose the batteries, then placed with equipment in a packaging that meets the Packing Group II performance standards of a type shown below.
